Are defense status and shield usage useless?

Question

I did some tests where:


1- I set the class's base defense/armor status to maximum (255)

2- Defense status on an item is also at maximum, with the test character using (255)

Β 

In cases 1 and 2, damage reduction in a battle was practically irrelevant

Is there a way to make defense statistics more useful? Or am I doing something wrong?
